4 Essential Steps to Scrapping Your Car

Admin • September 23, 2020
Scrapyard — Chicago Heights, IL — Big Daddy Scrap
No car can live forever, and even your favorite truck you've had since you were a teenager will meet its end. When your car becomes un-drivable and unsellable, you can scrap it to get one last return on investment.

Scrapping a car is a relatively easy process. Here are the four steps to take to scrap your car.

1. Find the Right Scrapyard
Be sure to check if the scrapyard is reputable. You don't want to go through all the effort of scrapping your car without any return. Check Google reviews and the yard's website. Call them on the phone to make sure the business exists outside of the Internet.

2. Prepare the Car
Once you have found your scrapyard, you need to prepare your vehicle. Remove any personal belongings that have accrued over the time you have used the vehicle. Be sure to check everywhere, as it is easy to forget things that have spent years in your car.

Even if you do not want any of the things left in your car, remove them anyway. Though your car is going to a junkyard, the car is not a place to keep your junk. If you do not clean out your car, the people at the junkyard will have to do it for you.

3. Get Proper Documentation
Sadly, you cannot just tow your car into a junkyard and leave it there, no questions asked. You need to take care of documentation first.

If your car has a title, you must transfer the title to the junkyard. This way, if somebody manages to steal your car and do damage, you will not be liable. Just like selling your car to another person, you must transfer your car's title to the buyer.

If your card does not have a title, things get harder. It is still possible to sell your car, but expect to jump through a few hoops before completing the process.

To change your title, you may have to remove the license plate and bring it to your local DMV. As you do this, be sure to cancel any insurance policy on the car.

4. Sell the Car
Once you have prepared your vehicle and taken care of documentation, it is time to get your car to the scrapyard. Coordinate with your junkyard to see if they offer pick-up or if you will have to tow the car yourself.

In the next couple days, double-check with the scrapyard that your title has transferred. Once you sell your car, the title is a legal liability that you want to take care of as soon as possible. If the scrapyard does not change your title quickly, call to be sure there are no problems.

Scrapping a car is a final return on investment from your well-used vehicle. Though the process may seem long and complicated, you will find that scrapping your car is easier than it seems.
